China and the US seek tariff peace on the edge of the abyss
New meeting between both powers two weeks after the expiration of the deadline that had been given to reach an agreement
The two main economic powers of the planet do not want blood to reach the river in its tariff war. But they have been negotiating for months and their positions do not seem to have gotten close enough. The talks that China and the US resumed on Thursday in Beijing have a different look. Not because it was Valentine's Day, as stressed by Chinese media with irony, but because they are celebrated only two weeks after the end of the 90-day truce that occurred in December.
If they do not sign the peace, on March 1 new taxes could be approved: Washington has already announced its intention to raise tariffs from China's imports of Chinese products by 10% to 25% for 200,000 million dollars. Fortunately, US President Donald Trump said that "the negotiations are going well" and that he does not rule out meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to tie the fringes that his subordinates leave loose. It is a good sign that the Chinese president will meet today with the American representatives, whom he will entertain with a traditional banquet.
The Chinese official newspaper 'Global Times' wrote that "both the attitude of the main American leaders and the reaction of the US market reflect the optimism of the country in terms of reaching an agreement." And he reinforced these good omens by referring to the information that Bloomberg advanced on Thursday: Trump is considering extending the truce for 60 more days to make it easier for the talks to reach a successful conclusion.
But all these hopeful gestures have already been seen in previous meetings and have always ended in disappointment. Trump wants to reduce the Chinese trade surplus , which last year marked a new record, and create jobs in the manufacturing sector in the United States. The technological sector is also involved in this struggle for global hegemony.
